What Is A Grand Master?

A Grand Master in martial arts is someone who has earned at least a 6th degree black belt.

First degree black belt and above are referred to as Sensei, Shifu, or Laoshi. Fourth degree black belt (and/or its equivalent) or above are what are called professor grades. Those holding fourth degree or above canbe referred to as Professor, Shihan, Shigong, and so forth.

Those reaching 6th and above are Grandmaster rankings are considered GM levels. 8th 9th 10th are somtimes referred to as Dr., Shihan, Shigong, Shiju, or Dashirdepending on the system, all representing Grandmaster rank.

Individual systems will differ, please consult your instructor for specific terminology of master and Grandmaster ranks.
